Dear Families,

As we find ourselves approaching the final week of Term 1, it's remarkable how swiftly time has passed. We extend our gratitude to all the staff, students, parents, and the wider community for their dedication and support to our school during the initial months of the year.

We are delighted to announce the formation of the new School Association committee for 2024, established during the AGM held on Wednesday, March 27th. This year's committee comprises a diverse blend of individuals, with a combination of returning members from 2023 and several new parents joining for 2024. It remains imperative for the sustainability and vitality of our School Association that we continually rejuvenate and diversify our membership, welcoming fresh perspectives, and ideas.

Looking ahead, the School Association will be coordinating a school Working Bee next term, with a primary focus on tidying up Nature Land and its surrounding areas. We will be seeking both manpower and assistance in the form of trailers to transport green waste. Stay tuned for further details on the confirmed date, which will be announced early next term.

For students from Prep to the 4/5 class, please note that portfolio folders will be sent home on the last day of term. This marks a change from previous years, where portfolios were only sent home at the end of Term 2. The portfolio will contain evidence of learning from our first term writing unit, offering families insight into their child's achievements this term. These portfolios will need to be returned to the office at the beginning of Term 2. Please be aware that the 5/6 classes will be sending their portfolios home during the first week of Term 2.

As the holiday season approaches, we hope that you all find opportunities to spend quality time with your family and friends. Term 2 is set to commence on Monday, April 29th.

This term our class have been investigating living things. We looked at the lifecycle of a butterfly and tied it in with our Harmony Day celebrations. We used a painting technique to make our butterfly symmetrical by painting on one side and then folding the paper over to print the black lines onto the other side. Some people chose to make their butterfly a monarch to use the colour of Harmony Day while others went for vibrant colours of their own choosing. We looked at the butterfly mural outside our classroom and the students have been photographed with their favourite butterfly from Harmony Day 2022.

This term in Music students have been enjoying playing a range of instruments, from ukuleles, marimbas, xylophones to our new little foot tambourines!

Younger students have particularly enjoyed having turns on the big bass and alto marimbas.

Students have had fun playing ukuleles – a very accessible instrument for young musicians. Most students have been working on reading chord charts, with a range of challenge. Younger students have been focussing on strumming, singing and overall listening skills.  

As a whole school in our Harmony Day Assembly we sang Acknowledgement of Country Song, milaythina, singing in palawa kani.

Last week a selection of students from grades 3-6 represented Goulburn Street at the interschool athletics carnival.  Each student did an incredible job participating in multiple events throughout the day and demonstrating wonderful community spirit by supporting each other when they were competing.

Amongst all the amazing efforts, some students were awarded placings in their events.  A huge congratulations to the following students, for their outstanding results:

Our annual Mothers Day Stall is Friday the 10th of May.  We have once again purchased small gifts that will be on sale from $2.00 - $6.00 and there will be enough for anyone wanting to purchase. 

Assemblies will be held at 11.45

We all have a role to play in keeping children and young people safe.  

This year, there is important training that anyone who works with children or young people must complete. This includes all our parent volunteers and service providers.

The training is compulsory under new laws designed to better safeguard children and young people in Tasmania.

It will help you understand what to do if you believe a child or young person is or may be being harmed, and to make sure you are doing all you can to prevent this from happening. The training will also tell you what you must report under the new laws.  

This simple, online training must be done as soon as possible, and you will need to complete it before you work with any children and young people this year.   

Once completed, you will receive a certificate, which you can save. Please email a copy of the certificate to louise.anders@decyp.tas.gov.au
