Dear Families,

It was wonderful to see all of our students return to school on Monday for the first day of Term 2. We hope you all had a great break and had the opportunity to spend some quality time with your children, family, and friends.

Next Wednesday 8^th of March we will be holding our Cross Country Carnival at Goulburn Street on the oval. Over the past 2 years we have expanded this event to include students from Kinder to Year 6. We warmly welcome all family and friends to come along provide encouragement and support for all the students who are participating. We will need parent support to be on stations throughout the course to provide directions to students. Please see Mr Latham when you arrive if you are available, noting that parents providing support must have a current WWVP card and completed the Safeguarding children training.

Teaching and Learning update

As a school we are invested in ensuring that we support all students to reach their full potential, and our major focus for 2024 is reading. We now have in place a Reading Intervention Team, called Multi-tiered System and Supports (MTTS), which oversees the whole school approach to how we support students who are not reaching grade level benchmarks in reading. The MTTS team makes decisions around the levels of support each student receives in the school. Many families would be aware of this support through their child’s engagement with Sonia and Helen our reading specialists.  

Currently the MTTS team are in the process of assessing all students from Prep to Year 6 on a wide range of core reading skills such as; letter and sound knowledge, word reading skills, oral reading fluency and reading comprehension. If your child is receiving additional support, you will be notified early this term.

School Association ‘Working Bee’ 

Finally, please keep in mind that the School Association will be running a ‘Working Bee’ early this term (Sunday morning/date TBC). The focus will be on clearing out Nature Land and the surrounding areas near the Tennis Courts. They will be looking for not only volunteers, but also people with trailers, as removing waste is the biggest challenge.

Grade 5/6 Brelis and 5/6 Tymms will be attending Parliament House on 2 occasions this Term. 

Thursday 23^rd May – viewing Parliament in session (9.00am – 1.00pm)

Monday 27^th May – tour of the House and role play (11.00am – 2.00pm)

Student will need to wear full school uniform, and bring a packed recess and drink on the Thursday(lunch orders as normal) and lunch on the Monday. Classes will be walking to and from Parliament House.  

Parent help would be greatly appreciated, if you would like to come along on either (or both) of these dates can you please let either Mrs Brelis or Mrs Tymms know.

Our annual Mothers Day Stall is Friday the 10th of May.  We have once again purchased small gifts that will be on sale from $2.00 - $6.00 and there will be enough for anyone wanting to purchase.

By showing up to school every day, your child will have the best opportunity at a bright future. It gives them every chance to be around friends, learn new things, and find interests.

Good attendance habits can sometimes be hard to stick. Keep trying to create a solid routine, to set your child up for success for the rest of the year.

We all have a role to play in keeping children and young people safe.  

This year, there is important training that anyone who works with children or young people must complete. This includes all our parent volunteers and service providers.

The training is compulsory under new laws designed to better safeguard children and young people in Tasmania.

It will help you understand what to do if you believe a child or young person is or may be being harmed, and to make sure you are doing all you can to prevent this from happening. The training will also tell you what you must report under the new laws.  

This simple, online training must be done as soon as possible, and you will need to complete it before you work with any children and young people this year.   

Once completed, you will receive a certificate, which you can save. Please email a copy of the certificate to louise.anders@decyp.tas.gov.au
