Dear Families,

It's great to finally see that the rain has stopped! It has certainly been a wild week of weather, with many indoor breaks, but overall, our students have done an amazing job managing a big dose of cabin fever!

The annual Book Week parade was a truly fantastic event, with over a hundred parents and friends coming to see our students and staff dressed up as their favourite book characters. A big thank you to all the families for the tremendous effort in creating such wonderful costumes - it's no easy task! It was also great to see so many students and families visiting the book fair, showing that the love of reading in our school is alive and well. Special thanks to Mitch in the library for his hard work in setting up and running the fair.

I am pleased to announce that starting next Tuesday, Simon Clarkson will be re-launching our garden program. Many of you already know Simon as our traffic controller on Goulburn Street each morning and afternoon. Simon brings a wealth of expertise and experience from running a successful garden program at Waimea Primary School.

Students from across the school will be selected to work with Simon, not only to grow plants and vegetables but also to participate in beautification projects throughout the school. We will be holding a meeting in the next few weeks for any interested parents who would like to support and be a part of the program. If anyone has any of the following items at home that they could donate, it would be greatly appreciated: large plastic pots, small shovels or wheelbarrows.

Our School Association Quiz Night is fast approaching and will be held next Friday, 13th September. We are still accepting donations in classes for the prize boxes, and the raffle is now live! It's always a great night and a wonderful opportunity to spend time with friends and family, while raising money for the school.

Finally, I want to wish our 3 teams who will represent the school on Saturday at the State Tournament of Minds Competition all the very best of luck. A special thanks to Kate, Kirsten, Hao, Rebecca, Amelia, Pip and Becky for all their time and effort facilitating our teams.

Grade 5/6 Tymms have been looking at the morpheme ‘struct’ (which means ‘to build’), as part of our spelling program.

Using construction paper we were asked to follow a series of instructions in order to reconstruct a picture, after first having deconstructed it!

Here are the results!

Afterwards, we were asked to write about our constructions, using as many words as possible with the morpheme ‘struct’ in them.

‘We were instructed to deconstruct a piece of art featuring a person made from various shapes and colours.  We were provided with construction paper and a photo reference to help construct our paper shape picture.  We didn’t encounter any obstructions during the construction of our piece of art, but we were delayed when one of our members left for band instruction.”

Grade 5 and Grade 6 Band Perform in Assembly.

On Friday 13^th of September, the Grade 5 band students and the Grade 6 students will each play one piece of music in assembly.  Band students will need to bring their instruments on this day. Parents and family members are welcome to attend.

STEM Spectacular at Hobart City High School – 3/4CA and 4/5C

On Thursday 5^th of September 3/4CA and 4/5C will be going on an excursion to Hobart City High School in participate in their STEM Spectacular Expo.

Students will participate in a number of activities involving STEM. 

We will be leaving school from 10.30 and will travel by bus to the Ogilvie Campus of HCHS.  We will work with the students at HCHS from 11.00-1.15.  We will then travel back to school by bus.  Students will have a break halfway through and they will be able to have their lunch and a little play.

Students will need to bring their lunch, a drink and wear full school uniform.

On Monday 16^th of September, the 5/6 unit will be going on an excursion to Bedlam Walls, Geilston Bay.  The excursion will be led by Trish from NITA and will be part of our work on Aboriginal culture.

We will be travelling by bus to the start of the walk, leaving school at 9.30am.  During the morning, we will walk around the track and participate in activities with Trish.  We will leave the site at 1.30pm and return to school. 

Students will need to bring their recess, lunch and a drink bottle.  Students should wear school uniform and sturdy walking shoes, it would be advisable to bring a coat in the case of cold weather.

Parent help would be greatly appreciated.  Please let your child’s class teacher know if you can attend.

Orders need to be delivered to the office no later than recess  on Thursday for delivery on Friday. Students need to bring along a paper bag with their name, class and order written on it and money preferably wrapped in foil inside the bag (if you have a sibling, money can be put into one bag for both if easier). We will investigate other forms of payment in time.

Dear Families,

Goulburn Street has been notified by the Department of Health of 1 confirmed case of Whooping cough. Please find attached the Department of Heath Whooping Cough Fact sheet which provides key information about the illness and steps to take if you suspect your child has been infected.

A reminder to all families that if your child is presenting with any flu/cold like symptoms they are to remain at home.
