Dear Families,

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff, students, parents, and the wider school community for their hard work and dedication throughout Term 3. Life in a school is always busy, with each day offering new challenges and experiences. At Goulburn Street, our priority is to ensure that all students feel valued and supported to become successful learners while building positive connections within the school environment.

During Term 3, we were finally able to open our Big Slide after many months of challenges. The slide has been a huge success with our students, and I’d like to extend my gratitude to the School Association and the entire school community for their fundraising efforts, which helped cover the associated costs. The school is currently reviewing options for new play equipment, and we will announce decisions next term.

We will kick off Term 4 with our Year 3-6 Swimming Carnival on Wednesday, 16th October. The event will be held at the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre from 10am to 1pm. Parents and friends are welcome to attend, and we will need volunteers on the day to help support the event.

Finally, I’d like to wish you all a wonderful school holiday break and hope you get the chance to spend quality time with your family and friends. Term 4 will begin on Monday 14th October.

Sausage Sizzle – Fundraising for Tournament of Minds Teams

On Thursday 19^th of September we will be having a sausage sizzle at school for lunch.  Students will be able to purchase sausages for $3.00 each for their lunch. 

Students won’t need to order their sausages, just bring along your money on Thursday and pay on collection of your sausage/s.

The money raised will support our 14 students heading to Sydney in October for the Tournament of Minds International Tournament.

Tournament of Minds 2024 – State Final.

On Saturday 7th of September, three teams of students from Goulburn Street Primary participated in the State Final of the Tournament of Minds. We had two teams participate in the Arts section of the competition and one team participate in the Social Science section of the competition. Prior to the competition day, the students worked extremely hard practising spontaneous challenges and preparing for their long term challenge in their own time.

We had a very successful tournament with all teams doing extremely well, representing our school with respect, enthusiasm and pride.  Our team, Seven Packets of Pringles won honours in the Arts section and our team, Harry Potter and the spirit of Tom won the Primary Arts section. Our Social Science team also won their Primary Social Science section. We are very proud of all of our students!

This now means we have two teams, representing Tasmanian schools, heading off to the International Final of ToM in Sydney at the end of October. 

A massive thank you to all the facilitators of our teams who have supported our students with their preparation for the competition, without you none of this would be possible.  Thank you to Kate, Kirsten, Rebecca, Amelia, Hao, Becky and Pip. 

We have been enjoying a range of activities in Music this term.

Classes have been working on improvising and composing vocal and instrumental soundscapes for two fabulous books, Possum Magic by Mem Fox – which reflects this year’s Book Week theme ‘Reading is Magic’, and Home in the Sky by Jeannie Baker, whose use of collage lends itself beautifully to musical interpretation through use of different layers and textures of sound.

Some classes have also been working on the fascinating and powerful effect music has on the brain, the way the use of music affects our emotions and the use of music in film.

Additionally, we’ve been developing our focussed listening skills through listening to a range of music on the theme of flying.  

We are very grateful to Veronika, one of our Teacher Assistants, who brought along her beautiful Celtic harp to share with the children. Her Dad made it for her as a surprise a long time ago and the children have loved having an improvise on it. Thank you Veronika!

Science in 3/4CA

Recently we  went to the Hobart City High school STEM spectacular. This was a great excursion where the students got to conduct experiments in a real science lab. The students participated in many different experiences – including learning about the acidity and pH levels of different liquids, watching what happened when certain substances were combined (making Elephant’s toothpaste), making an balloon zipline, slime and sherbert and experimenting with simple machines, trying to determine how they worked. A big thank you to the staff and students at HCHS for this exciting and informative excursion.

This term in class we have been working on a unit of work on Solids, Liquids and Gases.  We recently completed an experiment where we tested the melting points of three different types of chocolate, white, milk and dark chocolate. The students predicted which type of chocolate they thought would melt first. We also discussed the idea of a  fair test and ensured that we kept all conditions the same except for the type of chocolate that was being melted. The students then reflected on their results and came up with ideas as to why they thought their results occurred.

Launching into Learning

In some exciting news for Goulburn Street Primary School, we have been chosen to feature in the Department for Education, Children and Young People’s Qualiteach modules designed for educators of birth – 4 year old programs. The focus of the modules will be on early language and literacy skills, that lay a strong foundation for learning to read and write. Prior to the end of term, we will be visited by Jodi and Georgia who are leading this Early Years Project to meet with us and film elements of our LiL program. These video examples will provide the opportunity for educators to see each strategies in action and will build the capabilities of all staff across the early years!

LiL Excursion

On Friday 27^th September the Launching into Learning session will take place at Caldew Park (the Train Park) in West Hobart. Mrs Ellerton will meet families at the park, with the session running from 9-10:30am. This will be the final session for Term 3! In the case of inclement weather, the session will be in the LiL classroom. Please refer to the school Facebook page on the morning of the excursion for this information.

Term 3 and 4 Schedules

Please find attached LiL schedules for the remainder of Term 3, as well as the schedule for Term 4. Please note that LiL sessions will be paused during our Pre-Kinder sessions in November.

On the 11th of November 1/2 Shepherd and 2/3 James will be visiting Zoo Doo for the day. We will depart school at approximately 9.15am and return to school by about 2.45pm. Parents are welcome to join us at a cost of $25 per person and will need to make their own way there as we have limited capacity on the bus. 

We will be doing some worked based in the classroom at Zoo Doo as well as completing a guided tour with animal feeding included. Students will need to bring a packed lunch and drink bottle, wear full school uniform and comfortable walking shoes. Please let Miss Shepherd or Miss James know if you are able to make it along!

On Monday 28th of October, 3/4CA and 4/5C will be going on an excursion to Bedlam Walls, Geilston Bay.  The excursion will be led by Trish from NITA and will be part of our work on Aboriginal culture.

We will be travelling by bus to the start of the walk, leaving school at 9.30am.  During the morning, we will walk around the track and participate in activities with Trish.  We will leave the site at 1.30pm and return to school. 

Students will need to bring their recess, lunch and a drink bottle.  Students should wear school uniform and shoes suitable for walking, it would be advisable to bring a coat in the case of cold weather.

Parent help would be greatly appreciated.  Please let your child’s class teacher know if you can attend.

Assemblies will be held at 11.45

Orders need to be delivered to the office no later than recess  on Thursday for delivery on Friday. Students need to bring along a paper bag with their name, class and order written on it and money preferably wrapped in foil inside the bag (if you have a sibling, money can be put into one bag for both if easier). We will investigate other forms of payment in time.

Dear Families,

Goulburn Street has been notified by the Department of Health of 1 confirmed case of Whooping cough. Please find attached the Department of Heath Whooping Cough Fact sheet which provides key information about the illness and steps to take if you suspect your child has been infected.

A reminder to all families that if your child is presenting with any flu/cold like symptoms they are to remain at home.

13 students will be travelling to Taroona tomorrow (Wednesday the 21st August) with Mrs Cook for Taster Day. They will leave Goulburn Street at 9.10am and return by 3.00pm. Students will need to wear full school uniform, bring recess and a packed lunch and a pen.
