This term, our Kindergarten class have used beloved tales such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Possum Magic, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and Rosie’s Walk to explore features of texts, sequencing, vocabulary and repetitive language patterns.
In week 5 of term, as part of our Book Week celebrations, we visited The Glenorchy Library and were involved in an interactive re-telling of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. Children enjoyed wading through the swishy-swashy ‘grass’, squelching through thick oozy ‘mud’ and eventually finding a bear in a cave! Back at school, we enjoyed re-reading the story and creating a class map of the Bear Hunt journey. This involved working collaboratively, sequencing events and exploring vocabulary from the text. Maisie and Mikaela did a beautiful job at re-creating the swirling-whirling snowstorm from the story! There were also opportunities to explore positional language such as over, under and through.

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt had generated such as interest in map making, that next we decided to read Rosie’s Walk by Pat Hutchins. The Kindergarten children loved this story and paid very close attention to the images - laughing at the fox’s mishaps on each page! This text gave us the chance to further explore positional language and we decided to create our own class book – sending Rosie on another adventure!

In week 7 of term, we invited our Dads, Grandads and special people to join us for a Father’s Day celebration. We had planned a fun afternoon together at Natureland, but the rain meant that we had to stay inside. Nevertheless, we had a terrific afternoon with our special visitors - building, painting, reading and completing STEM challenges together.

During our weekly visits to Natureland, children have been noticing changes in the environment associated with spring. “They weren’t there before!” someone said as they noticed some beautiful pink buds on a tree. The other children came running to see. We had a discussion around spring and the changes we can expect to see and have been looking for ‘signs of spring’ in the playground. Last week we painted some beautiful wattle that we found in the Kinder playground. Aren’t they magnificent?!
