Dear Families,
We could not be prouder of our school community after last week’s Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival. The atmosphere was fantastic, with students celebrating both participation and success. The excitement extended beyond the carnival itself, turning into a week-long festival with longer-distance running events held at school. Our younger students embraced the opportunity to join in, racing alongside the older students and giving an impressive account of themselves!
A big thank you to all the parents and friends who attended, it was wonderful to see the grandstand packed for our small but mighty school community!
Attendance – Everyday Counts
At our school, we prioritise the social, emotional, and academic wellbeing of every child. A key part of this is supporting regular school attendance. Everyday counts and missing even one day per week can significantly impact a child’s learning and social connections. To put it into perspective, missing one day each week adds up to 40 days or 8 weeks of learning over a year, which is nearly a full term lost.
While we understand that illness is unavoidable, we are here to support families facing challenges with school attendance. Our Student Support and Wellbeing Team Lead, Louise Anders, and I will be actively monitoring attendance and reaching out to offer assistance when needed.
In 2024, our attendance rate was 91%, and this year, we are aiming for 94% or higher.

On Wednesday, 26th February, we held our School Association AGM and successfully welcomed our committee for 2025. We are fortunate to have a fantastic mix of experienced members alongside new faces, ensuring both continuity and fresh ideas. In an upcoming newsletter, the School Association will share their calendar of events for the year.

Upcoming Special Newsletter
Keep an eye out for a special newsletter this Friday, where we will highlight the important work, our school is doing to build a positive and inclusive school culture, with a major focus on addressing racism. This initiative will lead us into our Harmony Day Assembly later this term.
Thank you for your ongoing support!
Warm regards,
Michael

On Monday 24th February our Grade 3-6 students had their Athletics Carnival at the Domain Athletics Track. It was great to see so many students attending wearing their house colours and cheering loud throughout the day. A huge well done to all students who participated, with everyone trying their absolute best and most participating in every race. Thankyou to the parents, staff and Hobart City High students for taking on roles on the day to make our carnival run smoothly.
Well done to Oak house who finished as our winners at the end of the carnival!

House Captains
Congratulations again to our newly elected House and Vice Captains for our Phoenix and Oak Houses.
Phoenix House Captains - Femmi and Simon
Phoenix Vice Captains - Evie and Marlon
Oak House Captains - Mabel and Callum
Oak Vice Captains -Porcha and Edward
These students have already displayed great leadership skills supporting our students at our 3-6 Athletics carnival last week. Our House Captains will also be attending the GRIP leadership conference at MyState Arena on Tuesday 11th of March, where they will work with students from other schools to develop their leadership skills.
Student Leadership Group
This year we have established a new student leadership group for students in years 2-6. Each term a new group will be formed, and different students will have the opportunity to take on a class representative role within the Student Leadership Group. Students in classes from 2/3 have nominated to be part of the group and classes have selected 2 representatives for Term 1. Each term the group will work on a different project for the term. This term the Student Leadership Group will be supporting the organisation of a new initiative, an activities afternoon for all students in Prep to Year 6. This group will also be involved in organising fundraising endeavours for different causes.
Congratulations to our class representatives for Term 1. - Absent: Charlotte and Cleo
Daily PE Leaders
Mr Latham has been working with some Grade 6 students to prepare them for their role as Daily PE leaders. The students have been working really hard, and we are hoping to begin our Daily PE program in Week 6. It is great so many Year 6 students are keen to be part of this very worthwhile program supporting our students to be more active. Absent from photo: Cleo, Sophie, Marlin and Edward
Recognition for our school health nurses
School health nurses play an important role in our school community, delivering health education and promotion, and supporting student wellbeing.
The Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) has recently introduced the internationally recognised DAISY Award program in schools through the School Health Nurse program.
Those with a health background may already be familiar with this program. Run by the DAISY Foundation, it is a way to acknowledge and celebrate the care and compassion that nurses deliver to the people they care for each and every day.
The program is run in 38 countries, but this is the first time anywhere in the world it will be delivered in a school setting.
Nominations are now open for the DECYP DAISY Award. If you or a family member have had a positive experience with a school health nurse and would like to see their work recognised, why not consider nominating them!
You can nominate them using this form, by sending an email to daisy@decyp.tas.gov.au, or getting in touch with school staff for help or more information.
Whether you’re a student, parent or carer, or a DECYP staff member, anyone can nominate a school health nurse you think is worthy of recognition.
Nominations will close on 13 June, with winners announced at an awards ceremony on 4 July. For more information, you can also visit DECYP’s website.
Goulburn Street Primary will be participating in the Combined Primary Schools Bands and Choir program, which culminates in a concert at the end of the year. Towards the middle of 2nd Term, as information becomes available, we will form a special choir from Grades 3 – 6. This choir will be open to children who are not part of the Grades 5/6 Combined Band.
Launching into Learning runs on Friday mornings, sessions run from 9-10:30am in the Kindergarten classroom.
